This letterbook covers the period June-September 1883. Many of the letters are by Edison. There is also correspondence by Samuel Insull. Most of Edison's correspondence is in the hand of Insull or Alfred O. Tate, acting as Edison's secretary. Included in the volume are cost estimates for central stations in Lawrence, Massachusetts and Utica, New York. Other material deals with Edison's attendance at the opening of the central station in Sunbury, Pennsylvania. There are also letters regarding the purchase of building sites for central stations, correspondence about the payment of overdue bills, and a written examination prepared by Edison for central station engineers and metermen. Among the recipients are the Ansonia Brass & Copper Co., Babcock & Wilcox, Spencer Borden, William F. Brewster, Edward H. Johnson, Frank H. McCormick, W. D. Rich, and Frank J. Sprague. The spine is labeled "1883" and is stamped "Letters No. 1. T. A. Edison Construction Department." The book contains 502 numbered pages and an index. Approximately 30 percent of the book has been selected.
