[The following note describes a series of notebooks that were not selected. For that reason, a "no Documents found" message will appear if the "List Documents" button at the bottom of the note is used. These five notebooks were used by Walter N. Archer during the period August 1918-March 1920. Included are notes on examinations of tube loading and flake separating machines. Also included are reports on numbered lots of nickel hydrate, with data on weight per dump, flake per dump, and coarseness or fineness. In addition, there reports on the assembly of test cells with various batches of component chemicals and iron mixes. Some of the reports are signed by other experimenters such as George S. Andrews and E. Wechsler. Many are addressed to John V. Miller of the Edison Chemical Works or to W. J. O'Dair, Product Engineer of the Edison Storage Battery Co. Tube Loading Inspection Dept. Other recipients include F. W. Cunningham, manager of the ESBCo Engineering Dept., and company officials Charles E. Sholes and W. H. Ulrich. Copies of some of the reports were sent to Charles Edison and ESBCo officials G. J. Abrams, Harold N. Cox, and James F. Monahan.
These two notebooks were used by Andrew C. Ericksen during the period April 1915-May 1916. They contain details on storage battery work, probably for the ESBCo Research Dept. Included are descriptions of experiments on preparations of various storage battery compounds, along with chemical analyses, ideas about quality control, and notes on shop meetings.
These three notebooks were used by John Ober during the period August 1910-April 1913 as log books for the machine loading of nickel flake. The entries provide specifications of production for various machines, including average flake weight, hydrate weight, flake number, and hydrate number.
These two notebooks were used by John Ober during the period January 1913-January 1914. They contain data on batches of flake, including date, machine number, flake batch number, tube values, and average value.
These five notebooks were used by Edwin Smith, Jr., during the period December 1918-November 1922. They contain notes on various commercially available dry cells and on the use of various copper compounds in sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and zinc cells. Also included are notes on experiments relating to electrolytic solutions and electrolyte reclamation as well as other battery components. Some of the work involves attempts to improve battery quality by reducing the internal resistance.
These three notebooks were used by Henry E. Thayer during the period January-May 1920. They describe the making of experimental copper electrode plates for primary batteries. Included is information about ingredients, proportions, and the preparation process. There is also data on "breaking" tests, some of which were done for Edison, and charge/discharge runs. Summaries of the tests appear at the end of two of the books.
These fifty-three books were used primarily during the years 1911-1920 by a variety of experimenters, including Ralph Arbogast, Peter C. Christensen, Charles Emerson, F. Walter Horner, Whitney B. Jones, John Ober, Harold H. Smith, and H. A. Wannamacher. The books are listed in approximate chronological order except in cases of related books, which are grouped together according to the date of the earliest book.
