These 293 notebooks were used by Walter E. Holland, Harold H. Smith, and numerous other laboratory employees during the years 1910-1922 for the testing of battery cells. The books are described and listed in the following order: (1) Large Cell Tests (4 books); (2) Cell Test Series Books, Nos. 1-201 (204 books); (3) "Hot" Test Books (14 books); (4) Cell Test Administration Books (14 books); (5) Car Lighting Cell ("Willard") Tests (9 books); (6) Electrolyte Analysis Books (17 books); (7) Lead Cell Tests (5 books); (8) Cell History Binders (9 books); (9) Cell Tests by Battery Type (17 books).
Large Cell Tests These four notebooks were used during the years 1910-1915 by Walter E. Holland, Harold H. Smith, and others. They contain data on large, or commercial type, cells which were undergoing regular tests, probably relating to efficiency and overcharging. Included is information on the type and output of the cells tested, the run number, rates of charging, voltages, and the initials of the reviewer.N-Number Labels and Inscriptions on Front CoverSelected Book10-04-25"Daily Report of Large Cell Tests. The experimenters, who were working primarily under the direction of Harold H. Smith, manager of Edison Storage Battery Research Dept., include H. Gray, H. Millward, J. Roche, B. Voss, R. A. Zuchang, and employees named Arrowsmith and Torbensen. Each book contains data on the performance of a small number of individually identified cells, which were charged and discharged repeatedly in specific, lettered testing circuits. Voltage and other readings were taken at brief intervals during these consecutively numbered "runs." Most of the cells were manufactured by the Edison Storage Battery Co., but there are also tests of batteries manufactured by competing companies as well as special experimental cells, which are identified by number but otherwise not described. After a cell or group of cells was "cut out" of a testing circuit in one notebook, it frequently underwent additional charge and discharge cycles in later notebooks. More than thirty books were generally in use at any one time. In some cases, the books contain a notice of the tests to be performed, written by Smith on the first page, or include summary results tabulated at the end. The books are numbered sequentially from 1 to 201, although several numbers are duplicated. Books 169 and 175 have not been found. Some of the books consist of loosely bound carbon copies of memoranda containing directions for testing cells. Included is information about cell numbers, the type of circuit to which the cells should be connected, and the number and condition of runs to be performed. Other books contain notes on inspections of cell tests or time records of the numerous employees performing the test runs. Some of the memoranda books serve as "dialogue" books, with notes about and between the testers involved in the Cell Test Series Books Nos. 1-201. Other information that can be found in these books includes lists of active and idle cells in the Research Dept. and remarks about the disposition of the cells (for example, when they were "cut out," how they were treated, where they went, and for whom they were made). Juan Marley, Ludwig P. (Louis) Ott, and others to calculate the concentrations of electrolytes and electrolyte components for use in Edison storage batteries. A set of eleven volumes contains records of "control analyses" of electrolytes for the Edison Storage Battery Co. with daily calculations of the concentrations in specific drums of electrolytes. Another set of six volumes contains records of "control analyses" of lithium and potassium hydroxides, which were used in the electrolyte of the nickel-iron-alkaline storage battery. Included are daily calculations of the concentration of specific batches of hydroxide crystals and solutions.Book #N-NumberLabels and Inscriptions on Front Cover[additional information supplied by the editors appears in brackets]Set 1 111-01-04.2"Control analysis of Electrolyte for St.B.Co."211-09-07"II Control analysis of Electrolyte for St.B.Co"312-04-15.2"#3. J. Dinnany, Maurice E. Fox, Zachariah P. Halpin, Walter E. Holland, Miller Reese Hutchison, Harold H. Smith, and an employee named McKnight. Several books contain data on tests of various battery cell groups, with tables providing information about cell, date, time of alternating current charge and discharge, amps, volts, and temperature. Some of these cells were taken randomly from production for testing when commercial testing produced abnormal results. Summaries of the runs appear at the end of some of the books, along with data on monthly efficiency runs. One book, N-11-03-03, gives data on cell performance in charts and graphs. Three books contain tabulated data for battery performance tests conducted at the Brooklyn and Washington Navy Yards by Dinnany and Halpin under the direction of Hutchison. Another book contains notes by Fox on tests of C-14 cells in St. Petersburg, Russia. These four notebooks were used during the years 1910-1915 by Walter E. Holland, Harold H. Smith, and others. They contain data on large, or commercial type, cells which were undergoing regular tests, probably relating to efficiency and overcharging. Included is information on the type and output of the cells tested, the run number, rates of charging, voltages, and the initials of the reviewer.
These 204 notebooks were used during the period March 1910-November 1915, although most of the entries date from 1912 and 1913.
These fourteen notebooks were used during the period February 1913-April 1922. The experimenters, who probably performed the tests under the supervision of Harold H. Smith, include A. Kolodin, H. Millward, E. W. Riker, and R. A. Zuchang. The books, which were used consecutively, contain tabulated data on the performance of batteries at high temperatures. Each book contains data on as few as two, or as many as forty, numbered cells. The cells were charged and discharged repeatedly, while voltage and other readings were taken at brief intervals during these "runs." Twelve books contain the results of a "10 Runs Hot Test." One book involves "hot runs" of forty and fifty, while another contains tests of short tubes.
These fourteen notebooks were used during the years 1911-1918 by Walter N. Archer, Walter E. Holland, Roy C. Mitchell, Harold H. Smith, and various other employees in the Edison Storage Battery Research Dept. Some of the books contain indexes.
These nine notebooks were used during the period July 1910-December 1912 by numerous laboratory employees, including J. Rose and B. Voss, who began the tests under the supervision of Walter E. Holland. The books, which were used consecutively, contain tabulated data on the performance of car lighting batteries made by the Willard Co. Each book contains data on the performance of two cells assembled in lead containers in a wooden crate. The cells were charged and discharged repeatedly while voltage and other readings were taken at brief intervals.
These seventeen notebooks, which cover the period January 1911-March 1915, were used by D. Included are daily calculations of the concentration of specific batches of hydroxide crystals and solutions.
