1. TAE to Fred Catlin, February 22, 1890. In Walter Polk Phillips, Sketches Old and New (New York, 1897), p. 180. Fred Catlin (1848-1911), was a telegrapher associate of Edison during the 1860s and later chief operator and manager at the New York City headquarters of Western Union. Beginning in 1884, he organized annual speed tournaments for telegraphers. This letter probably relates to the 1890 tournament. Commenting on his celebrity, Edison states that "I'd rather have the small-pox than a swelled head."
