This letterbook covers the period February-June 1878. Most of the correspondence is by Edward H. Johnson, general agent of the Edison Speaking Phonograph Co. Among the recipients are Edison, Painter, Charles Batchelor, and various company officials including George L. Bradley, George E. Gourard, Gardiner G. Hubbard, Josiah C. Reiff, and Hilborne L. Roosevelt. Many of the letters pertain to the management and finances of the phonograph company. In addition, there is correspondence regarding exhibitions, advertisements, and promotions of the phonograph. Several letters provide instructions to exhibitors on how to operate the machines correctly. The book contains 84 numbered pages. Approximately 60 percent of the letters have been selected.
